Job Description SWACO is currently seeking candidates the Heavy Equipment Operator. The Heavy Equipment Operator performs all duties as directed by their Supervisor or his/her designee regarding equipment operation, solid waste placement, daily and intermediate cover, excavation and dirt hauling, alternate daily cover, traffic control, spotting trucks for dumping, assisting in cleaning and maintaining vehicles, buildings and grounds. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following: · Operate heavy equipment such as water truck, sweeper truck, roll-off truck, backhoe, compactors, articulated trucks, loaders, bulldozers, front-end loaders, material handlers and other equipment as needed; · Load trucks and receive waste at transfer stations; · Inspect equipment and complete daily logs and regulatory reporting forms; · Take accurate readings at leachate lift stations; · Repair erosion and leachate outbreaks; · Apply alternative daily cover, mulch, and grass seed; · Fuel vehicles and equipment; · Clean or assist with the cleaning of tracks and wheels of landfill equipment throughout the day; · Maintain the odor control system; · Direct traffic to proper area for dumping and assures that vehicles are located properly prior to dumping; · Pick up windblown litter around landfill site and on access roads and highways; · Assist drivers of waste hauling trucks as needed; · Install or assist in the installation of metal poles and plastic litter fence around landfill site; · Dump boxes and clean resident's pad as needed; · Clean or assist in the cleaning of offices and maintenance building as needed; · Open landfill gates for business and lock gates at end of day, and · Assist mechanic during the performance of basic maintenance on vehicles and equipment, including, but not limited to changing tires and retrieving parts. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES · None EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE · High school diploma or GED required; · Experience operating light/medium/heavy equipment such as water and sweeper trucks; roll-off trucks; backhoes; articulated trucks; compactors; bulldozers, and · Experience working at a landfill is preferred. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES · Operate light, medium, and heavy equipment, including, but not limited to, trash placement and slope / grade construction; · Use GPS data tracking system; · Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form; · Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions/manuals, and procedure manuals; · Read and comprehend simple instructions; · Add and subtract two digit numbers and multiply and divide by 10's and 100's; · Reliable, dependable, and reports for work on a consistent basis; · Maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that promotes good relationships with customers, clients, co-workers and management; · Demonstrate good interpersonal skills and the ability to work with individuals of diverse backgrounds; · Valid Ohio Class A Commercial Driver's License and Department of Transportation Medical Card required, and · Valid Ohio Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License is preferred. Valid Department of Transportation Medical Card also required if possess a commercial license. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS · While performing the essential duties of this position, the individual is regularly required to climb, lift, balance, walk, stoop, twist, and kneel; considerable use of the arms and legs, including use of hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk and hear; · The individual will regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move 100 pounds or more; · Will also climb ladders, use power tools and noise producing tools and equipment, work in heavy traffic conditions, and enter into spaces with limited working area; · Specific vision abilities required by this job include near, far, corrected, color, and the ability to adjust focus, and · Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) requirements as needed: hard hat, safety glasses, high visibility garment, work gloves, and steel toe boots with steel shanks. WORKING CONDITIONS · Regular exposure to weather conditions, heat, cold, noise, dust, odors, fumes, and mechanical and electrical hazards; · Work may be performed near moving mechanical parts, in elevated dangerous conditions, and outdoors, and · Must be available for emergency call, shift work, and mandatory overtime. PRE-EMPLOYMENT SCREENING Requires successful completion of background check and pre-employment drug screen.
