PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES The entry-level position on a towing vessel is called a “deckhand” on inland towboats, an “ordinary seaman” on coastal tugboats. These crewmembers prepare barges for loading and unloading cargo, build tows, and perform basic vessel maintenance and housekeeping duties that include grinding painted surfaces and painting, removing sea growth, mopping and general cleaning. They may also be asked to assist with engine repairs and have to know how to use mechanics tools. The Deckhand will handle, pull, throw and tie heavy large diameter (2”) lines and cables to tie up the vessel or barge that they are working on as well as carry steamboat ratchets and chain. They will also have to carry dewatering pumps and hoses. ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES The Deckhand will have to know basic firefighting...
