What you will do: Responsible for the oversight of distribution operations, driver training, assist in driver recruitment and compliance to all government and Airgas policies and procedures. The position encompasses coordinating through a network of distribution sites within a designated area. To serve as regional backup driver as determined by business needs. Internal and external customer contact is critical in this position. The success of this position is determined by reducing/eliminating and managing fleet/distribution risks while meeting business goals and achieving fully compliant distribution locations and drivers. This position reports to the VP of Safety and Compliance.
Fleet Manager responsibilities:
  • Total safety for fleet assigned and its drivers. Zero accidents and Zero incidents is the ultimate goal.
  • Review of distribution safety and compliance with each branch assigned
  • Develop relationships with key service providers to ensure compliance and cost competitiveness
  • Review distribution practices and metrics; propose initiatives that improve efficiency or effectiveness
  • Review of GPS data monthly with each branch.
  • Key mentor in driving branch compliance goals, including: auditing of driver paperwork to include trip reports, DVIR, Hazardous material manifests, Hours of service, Special Permit compliance, and continuous improvement program. Review of DOT Safety Management
  • System measurement reports (CSA2010)
  • Conduct annual DOT audits for each branch assigned
  • Lead route cause investigation for any incident involving a vehicle or driver
  • Ability to analyze data for route effectiveness and efficiencies
  • Prepare and present recommendations for distribution operational improvements
  • Develops team work with various distribution sites and teams
  • Assures that all drivers have the proper tools to perform their daily jobs
  • Prepares monthly management reports
  • Serves as a backup Driver as determined by business needs

Driver Trainer responsibilities:
  • Assist/Train new and existing associates in driver training as set forth in the Airgas transportation manual section 10,defensive driving techniques including the “Smith Driver System”, loading and unloading procedures, completion of required paperwork, fuel efficient driving and other techniques, company policies, and regulations.
  • Administer road tests as part of the new driver selection process.
  • Conduct annual driver road tests for all drivers in the group
  • Conduct forklift refresher training as defined in the Safety Manual
  • Participate in interviewing driver candidates and assist with completion of the orientation program.
  • Assist/ train new and existing associates in the safe use of forklift operation as set forth in the Airgas safety manual section 15 and Airgas East work safety rules
  • Serve as backup Driver as determined by business needs.
  • Assist safety directors as a resource for driver/driving topics and material for safety meetings and help conduct meetings as required.
  • Complete follow up training that is identified through observation rides or accident investigations.
  • Investigate unsafe delivery sites, as required.
  • Help with or provide training required by government legislation for example, drug and alcohol training.
  • Work safely and meet the requirements of all safety procedures and rules as prescribed by State laws, Federal law, and Airgas policies.
  • This position will require extensive travel and overnight stays away from home.

Qualifications

What you will need:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • College degree or equivalent work experience
  • Current commercial motor vehicle driver license – CDL A
  • Must be able to safely drive a forklift.
  • Ability to lead training for direct reports to include plant/branch managers and driving core
  • Ability to use Google Kite and learn operational software
  • Ability to create spreadsheets for operational efficiencies
  • Ability to learn and apply safety regulations to all areas of the business.
  • Must be organized, prompt and courteous.
  • Must be TEAM PLAYER and work well customers and associates at intercompany locations
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work with little or no supervision.
  • Interacts with a diverse group of customers, truck drivers and management personnel.
  • Lives by Airgas safety programs, OSHA, and all related rules, regulations, procedures which are applicable to this position’s responsibilities.
