JOB TITLE: Security Officer I LOCATION: Geisinger Medical Center Hospital DEPARTMENT: Security Services WORK SCHEDULE: Days WORK TYPE: Part Time

JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for maintaining safety and security for an assigned area. Maintains safety and security of patients, visitors, and employees; conducts routine patrols of assigned areas to keep property and persons free from risk; meets the qualifications to provide care for patients in the specific age range on their assigned area.

Directly accountable to the Supervisor Security and/or Manager, Security Services.


COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS: Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and follow instructions.

Demonstrated knowledge of first aid, CPR/AED, and modern fire fighting techniques preferred.

Demonstrated ability to perform hazardous material incident response services.


EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: Six months previous military, security, institutional, or police experience required. Security or police related courses / training preferred.

Required to successfully complete International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) Basic Healthcare Security Officer Certification within 12 months of employment.

Current PA Drivers License required.

Requires at least six months to become familiar with all duties and locations within the Medical Center.


WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Works in all types of weather. Responds to emergencies, fire alarms, hazardous material incidents. Deals with conflict, confrontation, and stressful situations on a routine basis. Performs both foot patrol and vehicle patrol of facilities and grounds.

Must be physically able to provide the essential services of the position.

GEISINGER MEDICAL CENTER: (GMC), located Danville, Pa., the largest tertiary/quaternary care teaching hospital in the region, is licensed for 475 beds, including 89 pediatric beds in the Janet Weis Children’s Hospital. GMC, a Magnet Hospital, maintains the region’s only Level 1 Regional Resource Trauma Center with additional qualifications in pediatrics. GMC offers an array of highly specialized medical and surgical services, including neurosciences, cardiovascular services, transplantation, women’s health (in the Women’s Pavilion), oncology and orthopaedics. The Hospital for Advanced Medicine serves as an integrated center for the most critical patients. Outpatient services are available on and off campus.
