Job Overview

This is semi-skilled work in the operation of various construction and maintenance equipment and trucks in the construction and maintenance of City roads, wastewater lines and other City owned facilities. Work involves safely operating the equipment and trucks and performing related manual tasks. Work is performed under the general supervision of a supervisor and is reviewed through inspection of work while in progress and upon completion.
Example of Duties:
  • Drives heavy trucks in hauling such materials as rock, gravel, sand, dirt and oil, drives a lowboy transport truck and trailer in hauling road construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Operates payloaders used to load dump trucks; operates vacuum truck, slope mower, all terrain mower, steel wheel roller, traffic roller, jackhammer; a backhoe and various other pieces of equipment when building or maintaining streets, alleys, and drainage facilities.
  • Operates bushhog and belly mowers; operates tractor mowers; performs manual labor in assisting crews.
  • Loads and unloads materials; assists in road maintenance activities, which may include patching roads and flagging traffic in construction areas.
  • Makes minor repairs, checks oils and tires and adjusts equipment to which assigned
  • May operate other pieces of light, medium or heavy equipment or trucks in the absence ofskilled equipment operators or truck drivers under the direct supervision of a qualified operator.
  • Enters confined space structures to perform maintenance on equipment.
  • Assist in the use of CCTV to televise sewer main lines and lateral connections.
  • Locate sewer main lines, service lines, and force mains using prescribed methods.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Performs related work as required.

Qualifications:
  • High School diploma or its equivalent.
  • One (1) year of experience in the operation of various construction and maintenance equipment and trucks.
  • OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provide the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities and other competencies necessary for success in the target position.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must obtain a valid state of Florida class "A" or "B" commercial driver's license with appropriate endorsements as are required by the employing department/division within 6 months of employment.Preference will be given to applicants who currently possess a valid state of Florida class "A" or "B" commercial driver's license.
  • Must be available for emergency call-out. Required to participate in the stand-by/call-out rotation to address problems after normal working hours and on weekends.
  • Required to pass and maintain qualifications for:
    • Respiratory Protection Physical
    • Pulmonary Function
    • Qualitative and Quantitative Fit Test(s).
  • May be required to work overtime, or alternate hours, as necessary for the efficient operation of the department.Position may be designated as Mission Critical by Department Director.

Supplemental Information:
  • Knowledge of traffic regulations and the practices followed in the care and safe operation of various construction equipment and trucks.
  • Knowledge of principles of operation of motor equipment sufficient to detect any defective operation.
  • Ability to perform manual labor related to municipal projects.
  • Ability to service a motor vehicle and to make minor running repairs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the general public.
  • Ability to enter confined spaces such as manholes, ARV structures, wet wells, etc., to perform maintenance on equipment.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT/CONDITIONS:
  • Requires heavy work that involves lifting, shoveling, stooping, twisting, walking or standing most of the time, much of it on uneven or broken ground, and carrying 35 to 100 pounds on a regular and recurring basis along with exerting up to 100 pounds of force on a frequent basis.
  • The job risks exposure to significant environmental hazards including bright/dim light, wet or humid conditions, disease, pathogens, extreme noise levels, traffic, toxic/caustic chemicals, fumes, noxious odors, moving machinery, heights, dusts, pollen, extreme cold and heat.
  • The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of smell, depth perception, and texture perception.
